SJB_inserts-2014-v1-1At St. John Berchmans, we are committed to enriching our students’ lives through our challenging curriculum; values based education, and diverse learning environment. St. John Berchmans School, an integral component of St. John Berchmans Parish, strives to encompass all facets of Christian living in its education of the whole child; spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical. We work to create an environment that encourages the learning potential of every student through a well-rounded curriculum including music, art, technology, physical education, reading and math classes. We strive to build a sense of self-esteem, confidence and love of learning. We value and respect the culture and academic diversity of the school community. We respect the dignity of each child as a practicing member of the family of God, celebrating prayer and liturgical experiences, and encompassing moral values into their everyday life. Our common goal is the development of the whole person. This is accomplished through an atmosphere of love and support provided for by the teachers, parents, and students working together.

SJB_inserts-2014-v1-2Donate to St. John Berchmans

We hope that you will consider the opportunity to support the students most in need at our school by becoming a donor. While we rank as one of the most affordable Catholic schools in the area, we often hear of parents working two or three jobs just to try to make a portion of the tuition for their child to continue at SJB. While our hearts break for these families, we are inspired by their faith and hopeful because of the strong message they are sending to their children about the importance of receiving a quality education.  We are likewise inspired by our families to continue to offer tuition assistance by reaching out to friends of St. John Berchmans School. If you are interested in becoming a donor, there are a variety of opportunities to donate to St. John Berchmans.

Matching Gifts

Many employers generously choose to match the charitable contributions of their employees, and the impact of your gift can be doubled or possibly tripled!  Some companies will also match gifts made by retirees and spouses.

A Matching Gift Program is one of the smartest ways to increase your giving. Did you know that you and your employer can both claim such donations as a charitable gift and save on income tax?

How to participate: Ask your employer if they participate in a Matching Gift Program.  If so, obtain your company’s Matching Gift Form from your Human Resources department, then complete the donor section of the form and mail it to:

St. John Berchmans School
2511 West Logan Boulevard
Chicago, IL 60647

We will do the rest of the processing. Then your company will send a check to St. John Berchmans School for the same amount you so generously donated to us.

Where Does My Donation Go?
Many families want to send their children to a Catholic school, but cannot do so without financial assistance. Our current tuition of $5,763, while low when compared to other private schools locally and nationally, remains a challenge for many families. Among our 250 students, almost 35% receive tuition assistance. The average gift is $2,920 per child.

In order to help St. John Berchmans School make Catholic education available to all of our families, we rely on the generosity of our donors.  In fact, we use fundraising dollars to supplement the educational costs for all our students. That is because the actual cost of a St. John Berchmans education is $8,303. Fundraising helps us to keep our tuition low while providing children with the quality of educational that they deserve. We appreciate your consideration for including St. John Berchmans School among your charitable contributions. Thank you!

SJB_inserts-2014-v1-3Scholarships
Scholarships at St. John Berchmans ensure that all are welcome. We are committed to opening our doors to families with a desire to provide their children with an excellent Catholic education-without exception.

TODAY…
In 2014, 77 out of our 250 students at St. John Berchmans School are receiving an average financial aid award of $2,920.

OUR GOAL…
St. John Berchmans School is committed to creating the School Scholarship Endowment. Once we complete all of the work that needs to be done on our school buildings, we hope have an endowment to be used for scholarships in order for us to continue to give each child the education they deserve at SJB. This endowment is expected to generate revenues to fund these scholarships in perpetuity.

SJB_inserts-2014-v1-42013-2014 Academic Accomplishments

1:1 iPad Program

We are extremely grateful that we were able to purchase four iPads for each of our PK-8th grade classrooms for the 2013-2014 school year. We piloted the use of iPads in 2012, with hopes to someday launch a 1:1 iPad program in our junior high. As a result, our teachers attended Professional Development that focused solely on technology for the entire school year so that they were able to learn ways to best use their iPads and Promethean Boards in the classroom. The iPads are used to help students practice and master basic skills, and challenge them to apply those skills both in and out of the classroom. There is a noticeable difference in the progress of our students since implementing the iPads into our curriculum, as well as student participation and engagement. We have also noticed that our teachers are better able to differentiate in the classroom since implementing the use of the iPads.

At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, we piloted a 1:1 iPad program in our 7th grade. We worked with the teachers and members of our staff to create a handbook and a plan for distribution and use of the iPads. The pilot program was a huge success, and we continued to notice improvements in the engagement and progress of all of our students, even those that typically struggle academically. We plan to use what we have learned from the pilot program to implement a 1:1 iPad Program in our 6th-8th grade classes for the 2014-2015 school year. We plan to continue encouraging our teachers to attend technology professional development, and will work closely with them as they help foster the growth and development of our students through the use of technology.

8th Grade Accomplishments and High School Acceptance

At St. John Berchmans, it is important to us that each student leaves here with the knowledge and skills that they need to be successful in high school and beyond .We work with each student and family individually to be sure that they are able to attend the high school of their choice, and attend a school that is the best fit for them. We are so proud that all of our 2014 graduates were accepted into their number one choice of high school. Next year, we will have SJB alumni at the following schools:
