RCIA for 2019-20 Begins in the Fall
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, more commonly referred to as the RCIA, is for anyone 18 years of age and older who would like to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation in the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help you complete the necessary steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another Christian denomination. Led by the Holy Spirit, the RCIA is a journey of faith that invites any adult who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith.
The RCIA group meets about three times per month on Thursday evenings from late September through the Easter Season with a team made up of lay people and guest speakers. It culminates with the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Participants are expected to attend Sunday Mass to become familiar with the liturgy and the faith community. Those who have already been baptized also receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. Additional gatherings will be scheduled on weekends as needed when the Easter Vigil draws near.
The RCIA is a time to tell stories, ask questions, meet new friends and explore prayer and scripture. If you are interested in finding out more about the RCIA, if you know of anyone who might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing to help as a team member or sponsor, please contact the parish office. Readiness to participate in the program is discerned in conversation with the Director of Faith Formation and Education.
For more information on becoming Catholic, please contact Sr. Diane Marie Collins ([email protected]) in the parish office, at 773.486.4300.
RCIA means Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Initiation means setting a firm foundation for the faith based on receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. We also always welcome Catholics who, while having received these sacraments, desire a refresher course of their faith taught on an adult level. However, RCIA focuses on faith development rather than doctrine mastery.
Sessions usually begin in October and run through Easter. We meet most Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
If you are interested in forming part of the team that leads RCIA sessions, or if you are interested in guiding a candidate through the process as a sponsor, please contact Sr. Diane Marie Collins.
